The advantages were to be ease in soft soils or overcoming obstacles. The inside room could be used for loads and crew. Problem was the membrane of the bellows : temperature, wear, friction. It was never built.

Walking Pod built in 2012 by Scott Parenteau, inspired by Teo Jansen, which writes :  "I am sending you some photos from my collection. They demonstrate the evolution this machine has made over the last year. The desert photo is the first debut of this machine at Burning man 2013, the second but still slow version of the pod. The photo of the pod in the city of Palo Alto is a faster upgraded pod but still with the older motors. The photo with the elevator lowered is just before the fastest motors but does have the chain guides installed.

 As for back ground, I started this pod originally as a shelter for the Burning man art festival here in the U.S. I decided to make it into a vehicle 4 months before the event so, the design and fabrication had to be very rushed. Most of the scrap metal and parts I already had and I estimate around $5,000 in new materials where needed to build this machine. It is all electric and originally used around 800 watts of power to move it. It was powered by two recycled commercial dish washing machine motors I had laying around my shop, later I replace those with much stronger conveyor motors which made the vehicle much stronger and faster. Power draw is now 1,600 watts, which is still less than the average hair dryer's 1,800 watts of power use. Speed has gone from .04 miles per hour in the past to .7 miles per hour now. Still not fast but, speed was never the goal. Each side has its own speed controlled motor, so I can steer by slowing one side or the other. Running one side of legs forward and one side backward are also possible.

 Rather than move with a high tech electronic machine with servos hydraulics and computers, I went back to my grandfather's tractor technology. It's simple, solid and will probably work tirelessly for many many years. It's also fast to build and very cheap.

 My future goal is to improve the speed. Make the legs more flexible for rough terrain, improve the step height and maybe make it water tight for use as an amphibious vehicle. However, in fabricating this machine I have discovered another leg linkage I think will be a game changer in the pursuit for walking craft. I may set the walking pod aside and build this idea first".
